As social media continues to grow and aspire those to login in and upload photos and clips from their personal daily lives, it’s evident that we as users remember to openly share social media as a safe and creative space. Often, some can get personally caught up in the web of social trends in mass media that can sometimes lead to negative mental health issues. This is often seen resulted in younger users and viewers who may feel a lack of comparison or representation to their personal selves. I believe social media can help address this problem by specifically focusing on the recent issues covered in the news media revolving DEI and magnifying inclusivity within mass media. This would mean not just in terms of race and gender but sharing representations of different mental health and economic status. It’s important that we use our platforms to not just entertain but use it as a tool to educate and learn about others from across nations. Learning different perspectives and seeing how the world may look from another’s point of view can broaden the minds of users by choosing to expand their horizons and see things from a different lens.
Being made for its inspiration and idea saving tools, the app Pinterest has been around for nearly two decades as it launched in January of 2010. Though some will argue that the app is “No Longer Popular”, it’s users currently consist of nearly 518 million active users per month. Though this number may sound great, compared to competitor apps like Tiktok (with 1.5 billion monthly users) and Instagram (with 2 billion monthly users) the app is clearly not as used and relevant to today’s age. Now imagine if we reprogrammed Pinterest as an app for people to continue searching and pinning images for their personal inspiration, but users can pin those images to create their own personal internet vison board that will represent their ideal lifestyle and goals. These images could consist of clothing, recipes, activities, travel plans, and more! Once posted, the images from their vision boards could then be linked and tagged to various brands and businesses for the user to connect to in hopes to bring their vison to life!
